HM Government Consultation on Renewable Electricity Financial Incentives- July 2009

The Energy Act 2008 paved the way for the introduction of a Feed In Tariff (FIT), a major financial incentive to buyers of wind turbines, so long as they are installed by a Microgeneration Certification Scheme accredited company (such as Green Generation).

In addition to the proposed FIT payments, customers will also benefit from energy export, at a price of not less than 3p/kWh, and the free clean electricity they use. The electricity buying price at the moment is about 10p/kWh (though this will obviously vary).

Green Generation expect a high demand for wind turbines, and encourage you to reserve your place in our installation schedule as soon as you can.

Summary of the proposals made by DECC;

  • Schemes installed from the 15th July 2009 will qualify for FIT payments from April 2010.
  • A fixed payment will be made for every kilowatt hour (kWh) generated with the rights to the power being with the turbine owner, so if consumed on site it offsets the cost of buying in electricity.
  • A guaranteed minimum payment additional to this (a payment of 3p/kWh is indicated in the document) for every kWh exported to the wider electricity market.
  • Receipt of the tariff will be linked to the ownership of the equipment therefore when a house is sold, the new owner will receive the payment.
  • It is proposed to allow generators to install different technologies on the same site, thus allowing them to benefit under the tariff schemes in their own right.
  • Off-grid generators would receive a generation tariff and benefit from avoided fuel costs.
  • Energy efficiency measures will not be a pre-requisite for the payment of FITs.

An indication of how different turbines will benefit from the feed-in-tariff

Installation costs assume a standard installation on a site with good access and with a cable run not exceeding 100m. Excludes groundwork. Costs exclude VAT (5% for domestic customers). Income assumes all power used on site with no additional allowance for any power exported. No allowance for tax (where applicable) or maintenance costs has been included. Output figures and costs are indicative only and based on an average wind speed of 5m/s, for a good site with open aspect. Turbines mounted on 15m tubular towers (Gaia - 18m lattice). For confirmation of these figures, please see your accountant, or an independent financial advisor. Individual projections can be provided.
